“What a huge upgrade!”
A review, by Bretorious(Posted on 5/4/11)

I've been shooting with my beloved D50 for years, and it's been a great relationship. But, as happens to many couples, I eventually outgrew the 50. I needed more specific control, better image processing, a larger screen, faster response, better predictive focusing, and an increased ISO range. Most importantly, I'd long since outgrown the presets. I needed instant access to the controls that I could only access by diving through menus.
The D300s is like heaven, and I don't have to give up my beloved DX lenses. Yeah, it's bigger, but I swear I was making better photos with this baby the first day, without even opening the manual. Exploring what this baby can do is like having a new woman. It's a good thing the D50 doesn't get jealous, since I'm going to need her as a backup from time to time.
I'm still learning what this thing can do, but it's a dream to be able to change settings like White Balance and ISO on the fly--they're right there on the dial. I can tell immediately if I didn't get the shot on the huge screen. On the 50, focus ALWAYS looked good, even if it was way off.
The video is unnecessary, but gorgeous. I'm not gonna lie--I would have bought the camera without it, but it's a great bonus. And having two cards (one CF and one SD) so I can dump NEF's on one and JPG's on the other--it's like lace underwear. (Just trying to stay with the theme, guys.)
Anyway, I'm sure that one day, she'll seem old and haggard. Her screen will be scratched, and the rubber grips will have been worn off. She'll get dirty contacts and flash error messages, and she'll end up in the bottom of the pack playing backup. But today, it's love at first sight. -

High-speed, fast-moving or slowed down for long Christmas light shots, the versatility and imagery of the D300s works so well for my work that Santa has promised me a second! Along with at least one of the vertical grips and a couple of extra batteries...Ho-ho-ho!
